The Saigon Union of Trading Co-operatives (Saigon Co.op) has committed to ensure sales of fresh Luc Ngan lychees from Bac Giang Province and Thanh Ha lychees from Hai Duong Province.
Starting on June 14, fresh Luc Ngan and Thanh Ha lychees will be sold at the Saigon Co.op retail shops, including Co.opmart, Co.opXtra, Co.opFood and HTV Co.op.
The stores will organise activities including discounts and sampling of lychees to boost consumption of the fruits.
All of the lychees have met VietGap standards and have hygiene and food safety certificates.
Saigon Co.op expects to buy between 400 and 600 tonnes this season.
The retail price of Luc Ngan and Thanh Ha lychee in the Saigon Co.op retail chain is currently only VND29,900 per kg.
Nguyen Anh Duc, deputy general director of Saigon Co.op, said the company bought the fruits directly from farmers and transported them by special trucks to ensure the best quality.
Saigon Co.op will act as a bridge to bring fresh lychee as well as other farm produce from the two provinces to the southern market, he said.
Duong Van Thai, vice chairman of Bac Giang Province People's Committee, said Luc Ngan lychees were famous for their sweet taste, thick flesh and tiny seeds.
Together with lychees, a list of 52 key products from the province has been compiled
For the first time this year, Luc Ngan lychees distributed at Saigon Co.op’s retail chain will pave the way for the province’s other products to be distributed in its system, he said. — VNS
