HCM CITY (Biz Hub) — Columbia Asia, the continent's largest healthcare company, on Thursday reported that Mitsui & Company Ltd is investing US$101 million in it.
Columbia said the money would be used to expand its network of hospitals across Asia, including in Việt Nam, and carry out several development projects currently underway.
It is set to open its first facility in Africa next month, a multi-specialty clinic in Nairobi, Kenya, under a new brand, Columbia Africa.
A part of the US-based Columbia Pacific Management, Columbia Asia has 27 hospitals and a clinic in India, Malaysia, Việt Nam, and Indonesia focused on serving a growing middle class.
The Tokyo-based Mitsui said it saw tremendous growth potential in the only healthcare provider in Asia to operate hospitals in so many countries under a single brand, and one of the few large, multinational providers in Asia to build the vast majority of its hospitals itself.
"Columbia Asia has proven over more than 20 years that it can enter new markets across various countries and develop international, high-quality hospitals that meet the needs of the emerging middle class," Koji Nagatomi, managing officer and CEO of Mitsui's healthcare and service business, said.
Columbia Asia has 10,000 employees serving more than 2.5 million patients a year, and 2,200 beds.
Mitsui will gain two seats on the Columbia board.
It is one of the most diversified and comprehensive trading, investment and service enterprises in the world, with 138 offices in 65 countries, as well as around 420 subsidiaries and associated companies world-wide. — VNS
