Vanilla Air, the low-cost airline owned by Japan's ANA Holdings Inc., launched its first flight from HCM City to Tokyo (Narita Airport) via Taipei (Tao Yuan Airport) on September 15.

The carrier's vice president, Mioko Yamamuro, said: "HCM City is a strategic destination in our network. This is the first destination in Southeast Asia that we fly to. Therefore, this moment is a huge milestone for Vanilla Air."

Vanilla will operate a daily flight deploying 180-seat Airbus A320-200 aircraft.

To mark the inauguration, it is offering a 50 per cent discount on fares to Taipei starting at VNĐ1.265 million (US$56.9) one way.

The promotional fares are available for booking until September 30 and for travel from now until March 25 next year.

The number of Vietnamese visiting Japan increased by 49 per cent last year, and around 141,000 have visited as of July this year, Yamamuro said.
