VietCycle and a globally environmental service providers ALBA held on Monday a ceremony to donate bicycles to 15 members of the plastic waste collection network.

The initiative aims to support the collection and recycling community to contribute to the efforts of Hà Nội and the northern provinces on waste management, especially plastic waste, boosting the circular economy.

Speaking at the award ceremony, the representative of ALBA Mingxi Zhao said that plastic waste is a resource for Việt Nam and the economy. The recycling of plastic waste can significantly reduce CO2 emissions.

"The world is changing, moving away from using plastic and the development from recycled material increasing. Many worldwide famous brands have set a recycle target of 25 per cent and more by the year of 2025," Zhao said.

"So the waste management sector, including plastic, is expected to grow rapidly in Việt Nam in the next decade."

As the profession of collecting and sorting plastic waste has become a crucial link in the circular value chain, the collaboration between VietCycle and ALBA is promoting gender equality and social inclusion in the collection system, as well as the entire plastic recycling industry, said Hoàng Đức Vượng, chairman of VietCycle.

The two are also developing a good-grade PET/HDPE plastic recycling plant with a capacity of up to 48,000 tonnes a year. The project is expected to be operational in 2024. — VNS
