Sai Gon Newport Corp wins contract to operate Cai Mep container berth

HCM CITY (Biz Hub) – The Sai Gon Newport Corporation has won a tender to operate the Cai Mep International container berth in Ba Ria - Vung Tau Province for 30 years after a leasing contract was signed on Monday (Dec 30) with the Viet Nam Maritime Administration in Ha Noi.

The Cai Mep - Thi Vai Port Complex, which began with construction of deep-water seaport in 2008, aims to meet rising demand for tranport in the southern region as well as demand for international goods transport transshipments.

The project requires investment of VND12,891 billion (US$620 million) from a loan provided by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and Viet Nam's counter capital.

The project includes six construction packages with the Package No 1 to build Cai Mep Container Berth being the most important work. This package, which comprises two piers totalling 600 metres to accommodate 110,000 container ships with about 600.000 TEUs per year, is worth nearly $291.5 million.

The Sai Gon Newport Corporation is the biggest port operator in Viet Nam. The company is operating terminals at Tan Cang - Cat Lai, Tan Cang - Central Region, Tan Cang - 189 Hai Phong, Tan Cang - Sa Dec, Tan Cang – Cao Lanh and Tan Cang - Cai Mep.

This year the Sai Gon Newport Corp handled nearly 3.9 million TEUs of containers at all ports, accounting for nearly 50 per cent of container handling volumes in the country.

The contract leasing ceremony was witnessed by Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai and representatives of the ministries of Transport, Finance, and Planning and Investment. — VNS
