HCM CITY — A popular language-learning platform, Duolingo, has recently affirmed that Việt Nam, with a young, globally minded population eager to study abroad, is a key priority market for both Duolingo’s language learning app and Duolingo English Test (DET).
The company’s newly-released Vietnam Report Card, reveals that English is the most popular language studied on the learning app, followed by Chinese, Japanese and Korean.
The report revealed the diverse motivations of Vietnamese language learners, with 23 per cent wanting to connect with people globally for social and professional networking, 17 per cent learn to support their education, and 13 per cent immerse themselves in the language to prepare for travel to enhance their overseas trip.
Additionally, the report highlights the rise of digital native learners, with 37 per cent of Duolingo users under the age of 35.
The strong motivation and preference for language learning are linked to educational and professional goals. Many Duolingo users take the DET – a comprehensive digital-first English proficiency assessment that measures reading, speaking, and listening skills – to gain admission to colleges and universities abroad. The report reveals that 70 per cent of Vietnamese DET takers applying for undergraduate programmes intend to study abroad, reinforcing Việt Nam’s position as one of the largest markets for international student mobility.
According to the report, aspiring learners believe that studying in foreign universities opens up better career opportunities. The United States has the highest number of DET score submissions, followed by Canada and Australia as strong alternatives, with the United Kingdom ranking fourth.
“As Việt Nam learners increasingly seek international education opportunities, the demand for accessible and secure testing solutions continues to grow. The Duolingo English Test addresses this demand by reducing traditional language assessment challenges through a digitally-driven approach, ensuring that all students, regardless of location and budget, can demonstrate their proficiency with integrity and confidence,” said Ravi Bhushan, head of global business development, Duolingo English Test.
Duolingo remains committed to making English learning and testing more accessible for Vietnamese students. Looking ahead, Duolingo will develop digital-first education tools, leveraging an interactive, gamified approach to language learning. This enhancement is expected to align with students’ studies, supporting their academic goals and career aspirations.
Additionally, DET will expand partnerships with key institutions and policymakers to reach more learners, help pave the way for more international opportunities for students, and ensure that overseas education will be accessible for all. — VNS
