The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) said on Monday that frozen durian, fresh coconuts and crocodiles from Việt Nam are now authorised for export to China.
The protocols, signed by MARD and the General Administration of Customs of China, were conducted during the state visit of Party General Secretary and President Tô Lâm to China.
The signing of these protocols marks a pivotal advancement in the agricultural trade ties between the two countries, with profound implications for Việt Nam’s agricultural sector, said MARD.
Frozen durian, designated as a priority product, is poised to significantly boost agricultural export revenues. The formal access to the Chinese market for this product is anticipated to unlock substantial opportunities for the country’s durian industry.
In 2023, Việt Nam exported approximately 500,000 tonnes of frozen durian, generating a turnover of US$2.3 billion, with China accounting for a predominant 90 per cent share.
According to MARD, frozen durian represents a new product offering higher value compared to fresh durian. The market opening for this item is set to diversify processing, alleviate seasonal harvesting pressures, and foster greater value addition within the durian sector.
The export of frozen durian may hit $400 - 500 million this year, positioning it for the billion-dollar export club by 2025.
Fresh coconuts also see huge export potential after gaining access to a market of 1.4 billion people.
Việt Nam, a major coconut producer, is expected to witness a $200-300 million boost in fresh coconut exports to China this year, fostering sustainable industry growth and quality enhancement to meet global standards.
Meanwhile, MARD highlights China's market opening for crocodiles as a major opportunity.
The move not only benefits the economy but also drives sustainable growth in Việt Nam’s crocodile farming, ensuring environmental and animal welfare standards.
Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Lê Minh Hoan sees the signed protocols as a result of positive negotiations.
“We anticipate a substantial boost in agricultural exports, particularly with the newly signed products entering the Chinese market, making a significant contribution to Việt Nam’s agricultural sector growth,” said Hoan.
The ministry pledges to work closely with Chinese customs for seamless exports, supporting Vietnamese enterprises in entering the Chinese market. — VNS
