The construction of Binh Thuan Province’s first waste treatment plant has begun. It will be able to treat 400 tonnes of waste a day once it starts in June 2017.

Set on 10 hectares in Phan Thiet City’s Tien Thanh Commune, the unit is being built at a cost of VND495 billion (US$22 million), said Le Quang Huy, general director of Nhat Hoang Ltd. Co.

The plant in the south central province will be equipped with incineration technology from Russia and an automatic controlling system from Japan.

According to the Phan Thiet Urban Works Company, around 400 tonnes of waste is generated every day in the city, and currently the only way to handle it is to bury it at the 26-hectare Binh Tu dumping site. However, the dump is already overfilled, so a waste treatment plant in the region is essential.

Luong Van Hai, deputy chairman of the provincial People’s Committee, said at the ground breaking ceremony on Saturday that the construction of the plant affirms the local authorities’ determination to solve the issue of environmental pollution.

Hai has asked the investor and contractors to strictly comply with regulations and technical procedures so that the plant’s operations would not affect the lives of locals living nearby. – VNS
