Low-cost carrier Vietjet marked the fifth anniversary of its first flight to China during a ceremony in Beijing on Thursday.

The event was attended by Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and a high-ranking delegation from Viet Nam.

Vietjet Vice Chairman Nguyen Thanh Hung said the airline launched its first service on the Viet Nam-China air route in 2014, bringing passengers to Kunming in the southwestern province of Yunnan.

Since then, Vietjet has worked to expand its network to other cities in China such as Chengdu, Chongqing, Tianjin and Shanghai.

To date, the carrier had transported five million passengers between Viet Nam and China on more than 23,000 flights, contributing to bilateral trade and tourism development, he said.

Minister of Transport Nguyen Van The said that Viet Nam’s aviation sector had recorded rapid development, including Vietjet, the first private carrier in Viet Nam.

After the launch of its first route to China five years ago, Vietjet’s network had expanded to 50 cities in China, according to The.

The minister said he hoped Vietjet would open flights to all 88 China’s international airports, thereby bolstering co-operation, exchanges and trade towards the development of the bilateral friendship in the future. — VNS
