HA NOI (Biz Hub) — The Ministry of National Defence has appointed Nguyen Manh Hung as the general director of the military-run telecom group Viettel, instead of Hoang Anh Xuan.
Hung, born in 1962, studied electronics and telecommunications in the former Soviet Union. He earned a master's degree in telecommunications in Australia and a master's degree in business management at the National Economics University in Ha Noi.
Viettel joined the telecommunications market in Viet Nam in 2010 with its total assets amounting to VND34 billion or US$1.6 million. It is the largest telecommunications service provider in Viet Nam, according to the 2013 statistics of the Ministry of Information and Communications. Last year, the telecom provider earned a revenue of VND162,866 billion or $7.75 billion, a 15.2 per cent increase compared with that in 2012.
The group has also invested in nine countries such as Laos, Mozambique and Haiti. Hung plays an important role in the rapid development of Viettel in the country and contributes to taking the enterprise firmly forward into foreign markets. — VNS
