Heineken Vietnam was named among the three most sustainable companies in Viet Nam in 2020 in the manufacturing sector at a ceremony to honour the top 100 sustainable businesses in Viet Nam on Thursday.

The event was organised by Viet Nam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) in co-operation with the Vietnam Business Council for Sustainable Development (VBCSD).

“Being in the top three most sustainable companies in Viet Nam for five years in a row is a great honour for Heineken Vietnam. For us, sustainable development means contributing positively to the prosperity, communities and environment of Viet Nam," said Holly Bostock, Corporate Affairs Director, Heineken Vietnam.

This is the fifth consecutive year Heineken Vietnam has received this recognition for its efforts in sustainability and positive impact on Viet Nam's socio-economic development.

Over the years, Heineken Vietnam supported 212,000 jobs and contributed 0.95 per cent of Viet Nam’s total GDP, through its value chain including VND5.7 trillion spent on local businesses by sourcing almost all of its packaging materials from local suppliers.

The company has continued to embed a circular economy model into its operations. In 2019, five out of six of its breweries used renewable thermal energy, 100 per cent of bottles and crates are returnable while 100 per cent of cans are recyclable, and 2,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions have been reduced by optimizing logistics and distribution. The company also achieves nearly zero waste to landfill as 99 per cent of waste or by-products are reused or recycled.

As part of its long term, strategic partnership with the National Traffic Safety Committee, it stepped up its 'When You Drive Never Drink' campaign in 2019 and invested a total of VND14 billion into responsible consumption initiatives, reaching more than 56 million consumers online and offline.

By 2025, Heineken Vietnam has set more ambitious sustainability targets: 100 per cent water balance; 100 per cent renewable energy and zero waste to landfill.

Organised annually since 2016, the top 100 sustainable businesses in Viet Nam programme aims to promote awareness about the importance and benefits of sustainable development in businesses, communities and society. — VNS
