Nghi Son 2 BOT Thermal Power Plant in Hai Ha Commune in Thanh Hoa Province’s Nghi Son Township officially went into commercial operation on Thursday.

The Vietnamese Government assigned the plant project with a net capacity of 1,200MW to Nghi Son 2 Power Liability Limited Company (NS2PC) as an investor with a total investment of US$2.8 billion.

The project strictly applies national and international standards on safety and the environment. It uses supercritical technology with high efficiency, reducing coal consumption, greenhouse gas emissions and other environmental issues.

On Wednesday, the investor (NS2PC) successfully tested the plant's Initial Dependable Capacity (IDC), witnessed by Vietnam Electricity experts and independent Consultants.

Deputy General Director of NS2PC Jubok Lee said that IDC test results reached 1,200MW (Net capacity).

The project has reached the finish line on schedule and safely (more than 18 million safe hours). Unit 1 (600MW) started commercial operation on January 11, 2022.

The plant will significantly contribute to regional and national energy security, promoting socio-economic development in the locality and the country.

Ranked as the second largest project in Thanh Hoa, it is a joint venture of Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO, 50 per cent), Marubeni Corporation (40 per cent), and Japan’s Tohuku Electric Power Co. Inc. (10 per cent).

NS2PC will operate the plant for the next 25 years and then hand it over to the Vietnamese Government for continuous operation.

The projects also supported teaching equipment and toys for all school levels, awarded 300 scholarships to students who overcome difficulties; sponsored training for 413 fishermen to get captain's certificates, trained farmers to make organic compost and bio-pesticides from locally available materials, and gifted nearly 2,000 gifts to disadvantaged households on special occasions such as War Invalids and Martyrs’ Day, and Tet holidays.
