Automaker Ford Vietnam said it has sold 100,000 Ranger cars over its 20 years in the market.

It also said that soon, instead of importing the car, it would deliver made-in-Viet Nam Rangers to customers from its Hai Duong Province plant.

This follows the completion of the first phase of a VND2 trillion (US$87 million) upgrade and expansion of the facility.

Its annual capacity is set to increase from 14,000 vehicles to 40,000.

Since its launch in the Vietnamese market in 2001, the Ranger has overcome prejudices against pickup trucks to become a consistent seller.

Starting off as a pickup, mainly serving businesses, it has become a versatile vehicle also used by individuals and families, the company said.

For 10 straight years it has remained the top seller in the pickup segment, with a more than 60 per cent market share. — VNS
