Marvell Technology, Inc., a US-based company that offers infrastructure semiconductor solutions, has announced plans to set up a semiconductor design centre in HCM City.

Loi Nguyen, executive vice president of Marvell’s optical and copper connectivity, said at the announcement ceremony on Tuesday: “One of the major challenges for the global semiconductor industry is a research and engineering shortage, and this presents a huge opportunity for aspiring Vietnamese tech talent.

“The establishment of Marvell’s design centre in Viet Nam is a significant step towards bridging this talent gap and fostering the semiconductor industry in the country.”

Marvel also awarded 10 scholarships to engineering and computer sciences undergraduates in Viet Nam, each worth US$2,000.

Susan Burns, the US consul general in HCM City, said: “Today’s announcement is also a terrific example of what my colleagues and I see here every day: American companies like Marvell recognising the tremendous potential of Viet Nam, and Viet Nam’s ability to attract foreign investment and world-class global brands and cutting-edge technologies.

“This makes me optimistic about what the US and Viet Nam can achieve in the coming year, as we look to upgrade our Comprehensive Partnership to a Strategic one, advance our Indo-Pacific Economic Framework and promote inclusive growth.” — VNS
