HA NOI (Biz Hub) — Thailand will soon grant a certificate of geographical indication (GI) to Viet Nam's Buon Ma Thuot coffee trademark, said Jutathip Vuthiparum from the Thailand Intellectual Property Department.
The department investigated the Buon Ma Thuot region in early August before granting the GI certificate for coffee to Viet Nam, Jutathip told the Thanh Nien Newspaper in Bangkok recently.
A GI is a sign used on certain products which corresponds to a specific geographical location or origin. The use of a GI may act as a certification that the product possesses certain qualities, is made according to traditional methods, or enjoys a certain reputation, due to its geographical origin.
She said Thailand has asked to protect the GI for Thai silk in Viet Nam.
Thai silk is a trademark that originates from the northeast of Thailand, where high quality silk had been produced for hundreds of years as a cottage industry. It has been supported by Queen Sirikit since 1970. — VNS
