The price of white-leg shrimp is rising in Trà Vinh, enabling farmers to earn higher profits.

Nguyễn Văn Thẩm, a shrimp trader in Hòa Thuận commune, Châu Thành district, said shrimp prices have gone up sharply since the end of August.

White-leg shrimp prices have gone up to VNĐ150,000 (US$6) per kilogramme, VNĐ14,000-19,000 higher than last week.

Farmers using technology could harvest up to 55 tonnes per hectare and achieve high profits of VNĐ20,000-30,000 per kilogramme.

Trần Trường Giang, director of the Trà Vinh Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, advised farmers in coastal districts, especially those without access to high-tech farming, to spread out their shrimp harvest.

This would reduce risks posed by bad weather and changes in water quality, and also prevent a fall in prices due to oversupply, he said.

Farmers are encouraged to harvest only two shrimp crops a year and farm other high-value aquatic species like sea crabs, seabass, mullet, and catfish during the remaining period to increase their income, he added. — VNS
