Fifteen ports in the Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta are operating at only half of their capacity as the waterways leading to some of the ports cannot accommodate big ships. Many Delta exporters are sending their goods to Cat Lai Port in HCM City to ship overseas.
The Mekong Delta's ports handled 1.2 million tonnes of goods in 2010, 1.4 million of goods in 2011, and 773,000 tonnes of goods last year, according to the Can Tho City Maritime Administration.
