Two tonnes of fresh lychee meeting GlobalGAP standards have been exported from the northern province of Hải Dương's Thanh Hà District to Europe by air.
Due to crop failure, it is estimated that the whole season's output of this year only reach about 40,000 to 45,000 tonnes, compared to 70,000 tonnes of previous year. Apart from the few areas of lychee that were quickly harvested, most of the main acreage lost revenue while urgent imports doubled last year.
Hải Dương has been harvesting early ripe lychee for 10 days.
Hải Dương's official lychee production is forecast to decrease by 70 to 90 per cent compared to last year's crop. Bắc Giang suffered even greater crop failures. — VNS
