Ha Noi will create optimal conditions for Samsung Vietnam to build a new research and development (R&D) centre, Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee Nguyen Duc Chung has said.
Chung made the pledge while receiving General Director of Samsung Vietnam Choi Joo-ho in Ha Noi on Tuesday.
He noted that municipal authorities granted a licence for the project previously, but had agreed with Samsung Vietnam’s proposal to build the centre at a new location, Chung said.
The chairman voiced his hope Samsung will accelerate the project to promptly start construction.
For his part, Choi Joo-ho said after a delay, the project to build the R&D centre has been resumed.
The centre will cover about 11,600sq.m in Ha Noi’s Tay Ho Tay (West Lake) urban area.
Choi said it will specialise in mobile phones and network devices, and is expected to take the lead in Samsung’s 5G technology development, contributing to the building of smart factories in Viet Nam.
The centre will also strengthen the position of Viet Nam as Samsung’s strategic hub in the region, and serve as a headquarters of Samsung in Viet Nam, he said.
Samsung currently boasts six factories in Viet Nam, along with a research centre in Ha Noi. In 2018, Samsung Vietnam posted export revenues of US$60 billion, accounting for 25 per cent of Viet Nam’s total export value. — VNS
