DONG NAI (Biz Hub)—A co-operative in the southern province of Dong Nai will supply unlimited amounts of durians and rambutans to Japan's Aeon supermarket chain in 2014.

This was agreed upon after a long-term contract was recently signed by the representatives of the Xuan Thanh agricultural service co-operative and Aeon supermarket.

The Japanese had earlier embarked on a fact-finding tour to Dong Nai to study the local farming techniques and had decided to purchase durians for VND35,000-40,000 per kilo and rambutans for VND12,000-13,000 per kilo, at marginally higher prices than in the domestic market.

The contract will benefit over 150 local farmers, who are expected to sell about 200 tonnes of Long Khanh-branded rambutans and durians to the Japanese importers, said Pham Phu Quoc, head of the cooperative.

Besides supplying fruits to the Aeon supermarket chain, the commune plans to expand its market nationwide, Quoc added. — VNS
