HA NOI (BizHub)—The National Office of Intellectual Property of Viet Nam recently awarded southern Bac Lieu Province the brand protection of geographical indications (GIs) for its salt.

Under the certificate, Bac Lieu Salt is solar salt with high concentrations of sodium chloride, magnesium levels, low calcium and sulfate, emphasising that the salt is famous for its unique favour, and the brand applies to that salt sold for domestic use, as well as export.

The salt is specifically defined as that made in the communes of Vinh Thinh and Vinh Hau in Hoa Binh District and the communes of Long Dien Dong, Long Dien Tay and Dien Hai in Dong Hai District.

According to the Bac Lieu website, the province is the largest salt producer in the Mekong Delta, with an annually production of 4,000 ha of salt.

The latest report from the Agriculture and Rural Development said that while salt production declined in other localities of Viet Nam, it has continued growing in Bac Lieu. —VNS
