HA NOI (Biz Hub) — Officials of Can Tho City held a meeting on December 10 with the Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO) to promote cooperation in high-tech agriculture.

The delegation comprised representatives of 32 Japanese enterprises that operate in the high-tech agriculture field, led by Yazuzumi Horotaka, chief representative in Ho Chi Minh City.

Horotaka said many parts of Japan and the Mekong Delta had similar types of soil, and both sides considered agriculture to be a key economic sector. The two sides expressed interest in promoting cooperation in terms of trading agricultural machinery, seedlings and fertilisers.

For its part, Japan believed modern science and technological solutions could be successfully applied in Viet Nam to reduce the harmful effects of environmental pollution on agricultural production.

Japan also wanted to improve productivity and the quality of agricultural products and to reduce farmers' dependence on labourers by using high-tech farming machinery, good seedlings and safe fertilisers.

The Japanese machines can be used for harvesting, packaging, drying food, gardening and creating a greenhouse system, and the high-yield seeds have short growth periods in the highly adaptable local soil. Companies such as Flora, Tokan and Asahi are dedicated to creating plant protection drugs and fertilisers made from natural ingredients that do not harm the consumers' health.

Vo Thanh Tong, chairman of the People's Committee of Can Tho City, stressed that Can Tho still has limitations in applying scientific and technical advances, especially in terms of agricultural techniques and efforts to reduce environmental pollution.

As such, local officials hoped Japan would support them and transfer Japan's expertise in agriculture to bring practical benefits to Mekong Delta farmers, especially in Can Tho. — VNS
