Vietnamese and Indian experts shared experiences and lessons learned during the application of stem cell therapy in treating autism and cerebral palsy patients at a workshop.

The workshop was held at the Vinmec International Hospital in Ha Noi on November 11.

At the event, participants heard stem cell therapy has shown promising results in treating young children with autism, cerebral palsy and other neuro-developmental disorders.

The technique has showed good results in more than 90 per cent of children with autism and cerebral palsy in India,” Dr Alok Sharma from India's Neuro Genbrain and Spine Institute said.

“Stem cell therapy is a very safe and simple technique. It should be performed on young children as soon as possible with an aim to repair and replace damaged cells in the brains of children," Dr Sharma said.

Dr Sharma said the technique was performed on more than 5,000 children with cerebral palsy and 500 autistic kids in India. Stem cell therapy will dramatically change the lives of many children with autism and cerebral palsy.

Vinmec hospital director Nguyen Thanh Liem said the hospital has successfully applied stem cell therapy to treat some 30 children with cerebral palsy in Việt Nam.

By repairing damaged cells in the brains of patients, the therapy helped children address difficulties in speaking, behaviour, emotional response, social relationship and reciprocity.

The therapy will open more opportunities for young patients with cerebral palsy and autism in Việt Nam, Liem added. — VNS
