President of Mozambique, Filipe Jacinto Nyusi, visited Viettel Group on September 10 as part of his visit to Việt Nam. This marks the second time that Viettel has hosted a head of state, highlighting the group's strategic significance in the technology and telecommunications sectors.
During the meeting, President Nyusi emphasised telecommunications as a key area of cooperation between Việt Nam and Mozambique.
“We recognise the importance of researching and implementing high-tech projects, technology solutions and digital transformation. Movitel has not only fulfilled these objectives but has also shown growth in both revenue and profits,” he said.
He also expressed hopes for Viettel's assistance in training Mozambique's young talent to become technology experts capable of competing globally. Additionally, the president called on Viettel to help strengthen Mozambique’s national security through its telecommunications network.
Viettel began its investment in Mozambique in 2012 with the launch of the Movitel brand, which has dramatically improved the nation’s telecommunications infrastructure. Movitel has been described as the 'Miracle of Africa' for extending telecommunications services to 97 per cent of rural areas, making Mozambique the country with the third-largest telecommunications infrastructure in Africa. Furthermore, Movitel has provided free internet access to over 2,500 schools nationwide.
Movitel has also been a pioneer in Mozambique’s digital transformation, building e-government infrastructure for the National Assembly and several state agencies. Moreover, 81 per cent of Movitel's mobile users rely on its electronic wallet services, which has significantly contributed to the spread of digital financial services across the country.
Chairman and CEO of Viettel Group, Major General Tào Đức Thắng said: “With Viettel's robust investment and the strong support of President Nyusi and the Government of Mozambique, Movitel will continue to thrive. Our goal is to transform from a traditional telecommunications provider into a leading telecom-tech company, bringing even greater benefits to Mozambique and its people.”
Viettel is also garnering attention from other nations, with several invitations for new investments and business opportunities. — VNS
