Big C and Central Group Vietnam have decided to expand the sale of Nghe An chayote grown in sand at all of Big C stores in the central and south region for one month, starting from March 7.

The decision came after the successful sales of chayote at 15 Big C supermarkets in the north.

The programme aims to help farmers and introduce consumer to chayote grown in sand, wich has a specific flavour and taste.

The chayote, which meets VietGAP standards, is being shipped to Big C supermarkets in the south and will be available at stores early next week.

The supermarket will sell chayote at VND5,900 per kilogram, lower than the cost price of VND9,900 per kilo. Customers can use their smartphones to trace the origin of the vegetable.

About 200 tonnes of Nghe An chayote will be sold at Big C stores on this occasion (100 tonnes in the south and 100 tonnes in the central and northern regions).

Le Thi Mai Linh, executive vice president of public relations at Central Group Vietnam, said she hoped the programme would contribute to building a brand and create a stable consumption market for the specialty from Nghe An Province.

Central Group Vietnam and Big C, in collaboration with a number of ministries and agencies, have in the past organised special programmes to promote agricultural products. Activities included Quang Ninh One Commune, One Product Fair in Ha Noi, Ben Tre One Commune, One Product Fair in HCM City, Da River Fish Week, Hung Yen Longan Week and Son La Safe Longan and Farm Produce Week. — VNS
