HA NOI (Biz Hub) — Metfone, a Military Telecom Group (Viettel) brand, purchased licences and assets from Beeline Cambodia.

The deal value was not disclosed. Sotelco Ltd, owner of Beeline Cambodia, will terminate activities related to the mobile networks in Cambodia.

All Beeline's scratch cards became invalid on Tuesday. Beeline's SIM and phone card users will be switched over to Metfone's network.

According to the signed agreement, Beeline Cambodia users would benefit from the large, existing network of Metfone, as well as its high-quality service that Beeline does not have – such as fourth generation (4G) technology.

Metfone will ultilise Beeline's infrastructure, telecommunication frequency and broadcast station in Cambodia.

The number of Beeline Cambodia users fell from 1.1 million in 2012 to 500,000 by the end of 2013. Meanwhile, after eight years operating, Metfone has become the biggest telecommunication service provider in Cambodia with about nine million subscribers.

Beeline is a subsidiary of Sotelco Ltd, which was bought by a Cambodian businessman, Huot Vanthan, from Russian mobile operator VimpelCom in 2013. — VNS
