Windows 8, launched last year, is compatible with a range of devices, from laptops to mobile phones. The corporation has sold 100 million copies of the operating system in the world so far.

The latest edition includes better multitasking capabilities and a boot-to-desktop option, as well as restoring the Start button. Windows 8.1 is also the first operating system to provide plug-and-play support for 3D printers.

Internet Explorer 11's new integration into Windows 8.1 helps optimise the Bing search engine and enables users to render high-quality graphics in the browser. The operating system also offers users with SkyDrive a cloud storage service which synchronises with browser tabs.

Microsoft said Windows 8.1 had been updated with biometric security and different forms of coding to ensure computer safety. — VNS
