HA NOI (Biz Hub) — The Ha Noi People's Committee will begin collecting road-use fees from motorbike owners as of July 21. The fees will be set at VND50,000 (US$2.3) per year for 100cc motorbikes and VND100,000 ($4.6) for motorbikes over 100cc.

The Ha Noi people's committees at grass roots levels will be responsible for collecting fees from local organisations, households and individuals. Motorbikes for public officials and poor households will be free of charge.

According to the Ha Noi People's Committee, road use is at maximum capacity. It's reported that there are some 35 million motorbikes and 1.5 million cars in Viet Nam, from whom the ministry hope to collect VND6 trillion ($286 million) this year.

Automobile owners have been paying road-use fees since January 1. The fees range from VND1.56 million to VND12.48 million and are based on engine capacity.

The collected fees will be used to maintain traffic systems nationwide. According to the Viet Nam Road Administration, the sector will need nearly VND11,650 billion to maintain traffic systems nationwide in 2014. — VNS
