HÀ NỘI — Malaysia has decided to remove anti-dumping duties and investigations on imported goods originating from or exported by Việt Nam, effective from Monday, June 23.

Malaysia's Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) recently announced its final decision regarding the anti-dumping review on cold-rolled steel or non-alloy steel products with a width greater than 1,300mm imported from China, South Korea, Japan and Việt Nam.

MITI will continue to impose duties on Chinese and Japanese steel producers, but will lift the duties on South Korean and Vietnamese exporters.

On December 24 last year, based on a request from Mycron Steel CRC Sdn. Bhd., representing the Malaysian steel industry, MITI initiated an administrative review on the expiry of anti-dumping duties applied to cold-rolled steel with a width exceeding 1,300mm, excluding cold-rolled black plate used for tin-plating, imports for the automotive sector and transformer cooling plates imported from China, South Korea, Japan and Việt Nam.

The anti-dumping duties on steel products were first imposed by Malaysia in 2015 and extended in 2020 to protect its steel industry from unfair trade practices and dumping by foreign producers.

MITI stated that the review was conducted under the World Trade Organization's Anti-Dumping Agreement and Malaysia’s Countervailing and Anti-Dumping Duties Act 1993.

Malaysia's decision to lift the anti-dumping duties on Vietnamese steel is a positive signal, helping to expand opportunities for Vietnamese companies to deepen their presence in the Southeast Asian export market. — VNS
