Bubble tea brand Gong Cha is set to donate at least 20,000 cups of bubble tea to people on the frontlines in the fight against COVID-19 in HCM City.

The company said the idea of donating a favourite beverage among young Vietnamese came to it after receiving messages from a doctor on the frontline during social distancing when all businesses are closed saying many of their colleagues are young people and a cup of bubble tea would be a spiritual gift for them.

The first 3,000 cups were then delivered to doctors and volunteers.

With the support of the Thu Duc City Fatherland Front, the programme was expanded after receiving positive feedback.

Around 1,200 cups are delivered every day, and so far over 15,000 have been sent to 80 locations like field hospitals and vaccination sites.

Gongcha said the menu is changed frequently and all the staff making bubble tea have been vaccinated and always comply with 5K regulations.

The programme will next be expanded to other districts and 50,000 cups or more are likely to be donated.

Gong Cha is a famous bubble tea brand with over 2,000 stores around the world. Since being franchised in Viet Nam in 2014 by Golden Trust Company Ltd, it has 45 stores. — VNS
