Some 1,500 Vietnamese people are receiving free healthcare services through the South Korean firm Hyosung Group’s 10th medical programme called “Smile Expedition” held in Đồng Nai Province from October 30 to November 2.

This year's programme is taking place at the People’s Committee of Xuân Đông Commune in the province’s Cẩm Mỹ District.

The VNĐ3.2 billion (US$129,630) programme is organised by Hyosung Việt Nam Co. Ltd. with sponsorship from Hyosung Group, and cooperates with the Korea Food Organisation for the Hungry International (KFHI) and Korea University Anam Hospital.

The four-day programme provides free healthcare services and medicine for local people, including about 300 students and 50 women, in fields such as internal medicine, dentistry, obstetrics, blood tests, ultrasound, electrocardiogram scan, X-ray, physical therapy and maxillofacial surgery.

Its medical volunteer team has about 80 people, including 36 Korean doctors and nurses.

Phan Thế Hưng, chairman of Xuân Đông Commune’s People’s Committee, said giving free-of-charge health examinations and medicine is a meaningful activity for disadvantaged people in the remote commune, which has a large population with more than 160 poor and near-poor households, and limited medical human resources.

“This programme contributes to the local authority’s efforts on improving healthcare for local people,” he said.

Kim Kyung Hwan, general director of Hyosung Việt Nam Co., Ltd, said the company is carrying out a number of social activities as a part of its responsibility towards development commitments.

“Through this medical support activity, Hyosung hopes to be a bridge to help boost the growth of the relationship between Việt Nam and RoK, as well as contribute to improving healthcare for local people in many cities and provinces across the country in the future, not only in Đồng Nai,” he said.

So far, more than 15,000 Vietnamese people with disadvantages have benefited from the “Smile Expedition” medical programme since its launch in 2011.

In 2007, a factory of Hyosung Việt Nam Co. Ltd. was established in Nhơn Trạch 5 Industrial Zone in Đồng Nai Province.

Up to now, Hyosung Group has invested more than $3.2 billion in Việt Nam, and has eight facilities across the country, including in Đồng Nai, Bà Rịa-Vũng Tàu, Quảng Nam and Bắc Ninh provinces, and has created jobs for about 9,000 labourers.

It targets to earn a total revenue of $4 billion this year. — VNS
