HA NOI (Biz Hub) — The construction of the Vietnam-Korea Institute of Science and Technology (V-KIST) will be carried out at Hoa Lac Hi-tech Park in the third quarter of this year.

Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Pham Cong Tac said this at a press conference on July 9 in Ha Noi.

Earlier, on May 18, the Prime Minister signed a decree on the establishment of the V-KIST, which will take effect on July 15.

According to the decree, the institute is being founded as part of an agreement between the governments of Viet Nam and South Korea. It is will be managed by the science and technology ministry.

V-KIST will have a special financial mechanism to encourage professional foreign and Vietnamese scientists to carry out research activities at the institute.

As planned, V-KIST will be a multi-disciplinary scientific research institute with researchers of international standards. The state-run institute will be equipped with modern infrastructure and equipment, and will have a self-control mechanism.

Earlier, in an interview with Vietnamplus online newspaper, Minister of Science and Technology Nguyen Quan said South Korea would give US$35 million from the nonrefundable official development assistance for the construction of V-KIST. He said Viet Nam would contribute the same amount of reciprocal capital.

The minister said pilot policies and mechanisms would be applied at the institute. If they were effective, the ministry would suggest to the National Assembly and the government to apply special mechanisms and preferential treatment in other research institutions also. — VNS
