The Asia Pacific Gateway (APG) submarine cable snapped at its Viet Nam-Hong Kong segment at 4pm, on Tuesday.

A representative from an internet service provider informed the online newspaper, VietnamPlus, about the damage on Wednesday.

The cause of the damage and the time of repair both remain unclear.

The 10,400-kilometre-long cable system is located under the Pacific Ocean, and connects Mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Viet Nam.

The capacity of the cable is about 54 terabits-per-second.

The APG started operating in December last year.

The cable has already experienced two incidents on December 31, in Singapore and Chongming (China). The problem was then repaired on January 22. — VNS
