HA NOI (Biz Hub) — Viet Nam was expected to manufacture 200,000 automobiles and four million motorbikes in 2015, marking respective yearly increases of 4.4 per cent and 2 per cent, according to the Heavy Industry Department under the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

Although motorbike sales had slowed, the automobile market had shown signs of a recovery, especially at the end of last year compared to the same periods in 2012 and 2013, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Cam Tu said.

Truong Thanh Hoai, head of the Heavy Industry Department, said the increase in car sales was partly due to a 2 per cent cut to registration fees, adding that trucks assembled at home were gaining popularity, especially in the light-weight category.

Last year, 128,000 cars and 3.3 million motorbikes were manufactured in Viet Nam, the ministry reported.

About two million cars and 37 million motorcycles are on the roads of Viet Nam, which has a population of more than 90 million.— VNS
