HA NOI (Biz Hub) — Toyota Motor Vietnam (TMV) is planning to conduct a recall campaign nationwide for two models imported and distributed by TMV including Land Cruiser Prado and Hiace.

The campaign is responding to the Toyota Motor Corporation's global recall for checking and replacing valve springs on four models including Tacoma, Coaster, Land Cruiser Prado and Hiace from this month.

The total affected vehicles imported from Japan and distributed by TMV is 126 units, including 61 units of Hiace and 65 units of Land Cruiser Prado, produced from May 2013 to 23rd October 2013. TMV will check the valve springs and install new ones for affected vehicles.

TMV has reported the general information of the recall to Vietnam Register (VR) and has sped up logistics preparations to implement the recall. Right after receiving approval from VR, TMV will announce officially the content of the recall to customers and press agencies in Viet Nam.

As announced by TMC, the engines in the involved vehicles contain valve springs which could have been produced with corrosive pitting on the surface of the springs. The corrosive pitting could lead to fatigue cracks, which could result in breakage of the valve springs over time.

If this occurs, the driver would notice an abnormal noise and rough engine performance. In some cases, the engine could fail and stop while the vehicle is being driven. The root cause of the recall is due to improper maintenance of the valve spring surface treatment process (nitriding), chlorides used during the surface treatment may have adhered to the spring surface, resulting in corrosion. — VNS
