HCM City (Biz Hub) —The fifth annual Road Safety Campaign sponsored by French tyre manufacturer Michelin will offer free tests of 4,000 seven-seat cars and give out information on traffic safety to about 8,000 people in events to be held in Ha Noi, HCM City and Da Nang.

The event is held in collaboration with the National Traffic Safety Committee.

The two-week long campaign from November 10-21 will be held at Michelin-authorised Service Centers and on November 8-9 in public areas.

Fun and educational activities on traffic rules will be included for children.

The campaign is designed to reinforce key road-safety messages, especially for youth in highly populated cities and provinces.

As a follow-up to education initiative, the Michelin Road Safety Comic will illustrate aspects of road safety for people of all ages, particularly young people.

For the last four years, over 17,000 passenger cars have received tyre checks and consultation, and on average 20 per cent of checked cars during the campaign period were underinflated. More than 80 per cent of drivers and car owners lacked knowledge about tyre care.

According to the National Traffic Safety Committee of Viet Nam, for the first nine months of 2014, more than 18,697 cases of traffic accident occurred, with 6,758 fatalities.

Traffic accidents are mainly due to poor road-safety awareness, poor infrastructure, and limited management and enforcement.

The Committee aims to keep the fatality number under 9,000 this year, 1,000 lower than last year's figure. — VNS
