HA NOI (Biz Hub) – The Mai Linh Group and Auto Motors Viet Nam Company (AMV) (the official importer of French car firm Renault) signed a memorandum of understanding on co-operation on December 16 in Ha Noi to carry out the project.

Under the project, 10,000 to 20,000 electric taxis will be imported from France and will be operated in Viet Nam's three large cities — Ha Noi, Da Nang and HCM City — for five years from 2016 to 2021.

The two parties said they wanted to contribute towards reducing carbon dioxide emissions and improving the environment in large cities, in response to the COP21 Paris Climate Conference agreement.

Renault, the world's largest manufacturer of electric cars, played an important role at the Paris conference, held from November 30 to December 11. It displayed 200 electric cars out of its 73,400 electric taxis that are being operated across the world as of now.

Xavier Coiffard, AMV's general director, said Renault Viet Nam wanted to contribute towards improving the living environment, and reducing pollution in Viet Nam, which has been warned about severe air pollution.

Coiffard said electric taxis, which can run 200km once fully charged, have been successful in France and are highly encouraged by the French government.

Ho Huy, general director of the Mai Linh group, one of Viet Nam's major taxi operators, said it was the largest ambitious project of the company since its establishment in 1993, and said he believed the project would be successful.

"Through the project, we also wish to contribute towards reducing pollution for a better standard of life," Huy said.

Thirty electric taxis will operate in HCM City and Ha Noi from January next year for a trial period. — VNS
