Car imports plummeted in September

Viet Nam spent over US$165 million importing 6,111 complete built-up cars in September, a 22 per cent reduction compared to previous month, according to the preliminary report of the General Department of Customs.

The report showed a significant decline in the number of Indonesian cars entering Viet Nam. In September, only 320 cars were imported from the country, down from the 2,976 units imported in August.

Meanwhile, the import of US vehicles impressed car buyers in September with 427 units imported to Viet Nam, up 25 per cent from the previous month. With this import volume, the US ranked as the third largest exporter of cars to Viet Nam, after Thailand (2,765 units) and China (1,100 units).

In the latest report of the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (VAMA), the sale of imported cars in September reached 6,477 — a slight decrease of 2 per cent compared to the last month. SUV Toyota Fortuner emerged as the best-selling imported car with a total of 1,267 vehicles being sold. Currently, Fortuner is being imported from Indonesia. — VNS
