HA NOI (Biz Hub) — Telemor, a subsidiary of the Vietnam Military Telecommunications Group (Viettel) in Timor-Leste, has been recognised as one of the best operators in an emerging market by the World Communication Awards (WCA) 2015.

This is the second international award that Telemor has won this year.

The award was one of 18 WCA 2015 awards given to telecom businesses that, under specific conditions in developing countries, had achieved success in business and contributed considerably to national telecommunications development.

In Timor-Leste, Telemor invested over US$30 million to develop telecommunications infrastructure, with 320 base transceiver stations installed and more than 2,000km of optical fibre cable laid, covering 96 per cent of the local population.

The presence of Telemor has reduced the telecommunication charges in Timor-Leste by 20 times. It now boasts a widespread telecom equipment distribution system with 2,500 outlets.

Viettel received the World Communication Awards (WCA) 2009 for best operator in a developing market. Viettel's foreign subsidiaries, including Metfone in Cambodia and Unitel in Laos, also won that prize in 2011 and 2012, respectively.

Since 2008, Viettel has won 16 prestigious international awards such as the World Communications Awards, Frost and Sullivan Awards, and the Stevie Awards (International Business Awards).

Viettel has been operating in nine markets across Asia, Africa and the Americas, where it has helped build infrastructure and provided telecommunications services to more than 175 million customers, of which 13 million are existing customers.

In some markets, such as Cambodia (through Metfone) and Mozambique (through Movitel), the company is a market leader in terms of subscribers, revenue and infrastructure. — VNS
