HA NOI (Biz Hub) — Viet Nam has built a data bank of 70,000 science and technology themes, 14,000 inventions, 15,000 scientists and about 3,500 businesses investing in science and technology.

This information was released at the first Science and Technology Forum held at the Hoa Lac Hi-Tech Park recently. The forum aimed to help scientists and students at 70 universities involved in scientific research to connect and exchange experiences. In addition, it will act as a bridge between science researchers, investors and venture capital funds to commercialise scientific subjects.

The forum will also connect 1,000 test centres, laboratories at universities, departments and businesses to allow product testing by scientists and students.

More than 400 venture capital funds inside and outside the country will provide good investments for scientific subjects.

Nguyen Trung, deputy head of the Hoa Lac Hi-Tech Park's management board, said the park had newly established a technology transfer office to promote and provide resources to young scientists and students.

"This is an open forum to encourage people to participate in scientific research and in incubating businesses in the future," Trung said.

"We can see that large companies in the world always pay attention to research and development (R&D). For example, Facebook uses 30 per cent of its total revenue for R&D," Nguyen Lam Thanh, director of the park's science and technology department, said.

Thanh said the budget for R&D in Viet Nam was still limited, thus making the number of inventions quite modest. The country has a young population that can suit the establishment of start-ups. We need a forum to connect scientists and enterprises, he said.

At the event, students from universities showcased their inventions and studies that have high application value. —  VNS
