HA NOI (Biz Hub) — Viber Media Co is set to close down its representative office in Viet Nam and establish its headquarters for the Asia-Pacific region in the Philippines.

The headquarters will manage the Israeli-founded firm's marketing activities in Viet Nam, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore, as well as Thailand and Myanmar. It is expected to become operational in August, after which the office in Viet Nam will be officially shut down.

Nguyen Dang Quynh Anh, Viber's Country Manager in Viet Nam, said the move was part of the company's changing strategy in the Asia-Pacific region.

When asked why the office in Viet Nam was being closed down, she said: "We have fulfilled our mission of creating a foundation for Viber in the Vietnamese over-the-top (OTT) market. The OTT market is a multinational platform that connects people in different countries, not just those in one nation."

"Viber users in Viet Nam can use the app as usual and may update the international versions," Anh said, adding that the app had won about 60 per cent of the market share in Viet Nam at the beginning of this year.

She clarified that Viber counted its users based on their activity during the month and did not base their estimate on the number of people registering for an account.

Viber is an instant messaging and Voice over Internet Protocol application for smartphones developed by Viber Media in 2010. It has some 23 million users in the country. The representative office officially opened in Viet Nam in January 2014. — VNS
