HA NOI (Biz Hub) — Vietnamese information technology experts have posted an online video showing them dumping buckets of ice water on their heads to raise public awareness of a neurodegenerative disorder.
When they posted the video on techrum.vn, a Vietnamese forum for IT experts, they joined the ranks of world renowned IT personalities promoting public awareness of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
These include Chief Executive Officers Bill Gates of Microsoft, Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook and Tim Cook of Apple.
The idea for this came from the Ice Bucket Challenge in the US which the family of popular baseball player Pete Frates initiated last month. Frates was diagnosed with ALS in 2012.
One of the persons challenged by the website was Tran Manh Hiep, administrator of tinhte.vn, a forum on technology. After doing the ice bucket challenge, he challenged four people: Le Ngoc Vy, Communications Manager at Microsoft Devices; Mai Trieu Nguyen, Director of the Mai Nguyen mobile phone chain stores; Pham An Duong, Marketing Director of Intel Vietnam; and photographer Dang Quoc Chuong.
Those, who did not accept the challenge were asked to donate to the Hieu Ve Trai Tim (Understanding the Heart) fund or any charitable fund established by the forum. Both Vy and Nguyen took the challenge.
The campaign has attracted Vietnamese IT workers, who continue to support it by challenging others. — VNS
