Over one fourth of Việt Nam's population participates in eSports

HÀ NỘI — Việt Nam ranked among the top five Southeast Asian countries with the highest number of eSports followers, underscoring the growing prominence of eSports in the country, according to the Vietnam eSports White Paper 2022–2023.

The report, compiled by Việt Nam Recreational eSports Association (VIRESA) in collaboration with OTA Network, offers in-depth insights into the eSports market in Việt Nam and Southeast Asia.

In 2023, Việt Nam ranked among the top five Southeast Asian countries with the highest number of eSports followers, with 16 per cent of the population tuning in to eSports tournaments, placing the country on par with Indonesia and Taiwan (China) in terms of audience engagement.

The number of eSports participants in Việt Nam has reached 28.2 million, accounting for 28.7 per cent of the population, reflecting the growing prominence of eSports, which now rivals traditional sports.

The White Paper also revealed that Việt Nam's eSports industry revenue reached US$5.78 million in 2023, marking an 11.15 per cent increase compared to 2022. The annual revenue growth rate (CAGR) stands at 10.95 per cent, with the industry's market size expected to hit $8.73 million by 2027.

The largest revenue segment in 2023 came from sponsorships and advertising, contributing approximately $1.7 million, followed by broadcasting rights, which accounted for over $1.4 million - a 31.7 per cent increase from 2022.

Additionally, the period 2022–2023 witnessed a significant surge in eSports tournaments across Việt Nam. The total prize pool for domestic eSports competitions in 2023 exceeded VNĐ41 billion ($1.6 million), representing a 32.26 per cent increase from 2022.

Among various eSports titles, Liên Quân Mobile emerged as the most popular and heavily invested game in Việt Nam, with a total prize pool exceeding VNĐ12 billion ($473,000) in 2023.

In the Southeast Asian region, the electronic entertainment market was projected to reach $14.8 billion in 2024, with an expected increase to $14.93 billion by 2029. The compound annual growth rate (CAGR) for the 2024–2029 period is estimated at 0.19 per cent. — VNS
