HA NOI (Biz Hub) — American entertainment website TheRichest has listed Nguyen Ha Dong, the Vietnamese creator of the Flappy Bird game, among the top 10 Internet millionaires who made money out of thin air.
According to the website, the Flappy Bird game was downloaded more than 50 million times and rated more than 90,000 times in its almost-nine months of existence, making it one of the most addictive games in recent memory. "It made Nguyen approximately US$3 million. Not an incredible amount, especially for this list. But what sets it apart is that it earned that profit in just 60 days," it wrote.
The list also includes Matthew Mullenweg, creator of the free and open source blogging tool WordPress and David Karp, founder of the microblogging platform Tumblr.
Dong was born in 1985 in Ha Noi City. His game was released in May 2013 and went viral at the beginning of 2014. In February, Dong removed Flappy Bird from the App Store and Google Play because it was "too addictive". In August, he uploaded his new game Swing Copters on the two online stores, but it has not been as successful as Flappy Bird was. — VNS
