Many firms are keen on investing some VND100 trillion (US$4.4 billion) in renewable energy projects in southern Bac Lieu Province, according to the provincial authority.

These include Phuong Anh Company, which plans to invest VND15.94 trillion in Hoa Binh 1 wind power project, and Dong A - Vatenergy Company, which wants to invest VND13 trillion in Dong Hai 1 wind power project.

Japan’s UIVN is keen on investing VND13.7 trillion in Dong Hai 2 wind power project, while Ecotech Viet Nam, in partnership with the United States’ General Electric, is planning to invest VND20 trillion in Dong Hai 3 wind power project.

Bac Lieu has a 56km-long coastline with stable wind power - an advantage to develop renewable energy.

Duong Thanh Trung, chairman of the provincial People’s Committee, said Bac Lieu wanted to attract investments in sectors that had the potential and advantage, such as hi-tech agriculture, especially shrimp farming, renewable energy, high-quality trade, services, tourism, education and healthcare.

The province’s high-technology agriculture specialising in shrimp farming has lured 20 enterprises. Bac Lieu is striving to become a hub of shrimp production in Viet Nam.

To promote investment, Bac Lieu will organise a large-scale investment promotion conference on January 29-30 that is expected to attract more than 500 participants. This will be the first such conference in the province since it was established more than two decades ago.

The conference is only one of a series of events. Other highlights will include the inauguration ceremony of a hi-tech shrimp-farming centre, the start of the third phase of the Bac Lieu 3 wind power plant and the unveiling of the world’s largest shrimp statue. — VNS
