Android dominates with budget tablets

HCM CITY (Biz Hub)— Vietnamese tablet shipments in the first quarter of 2013 spiked 130 per cent year-on-year to 130,608 units, according to the International Data Corporation's (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Tablet Trackers.

Fuelling the growth were budget Android tablets targeted at the lower end of the market under brand names like POP, Coby and Cutepad.

"A flood of inexpensive Android tablets gave the Vietnamese market the boost it needed to continue growing," said Vo Le Tam Thanh, senior market analyst for mobile devices at IDC Viet Nam.

"Athough Android was the top operating system, Samsung suffered the most from this influx of budget tablets in the first quarter of 2013, but we expect the vendor to bounce back strongly over the rest of this year," he said. — VNS
