HA NOI (Biz Hub) — Viet Nam and Japan would promote trade activities for farming, forestry and fisheries products between the two countries in the near future.

Viet Nam's Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Cao Duc Phat said this at the second high-ranking dialogue yesterday in Ha Noi with Japanese Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Hayashi Yoshimasa on development cooperation in agricultural sector between the two countries.

Phat said Viet Nam has opened its market for beef, pork and poultry meat imported from Japan.

He also proposed that Japan permits export of Viet Nam's mango, red dragon fruit and fresh litchi to Japan.

Meanwhile, Minister Yoshimasa proposed that Viet Nam should open its local market for Japanese apple from September and create conditions conducive for Japanese enterprises in the agricultural and food sectors as well as improve business environment.

The two countries have worked out requirements for importing Japanese apples to Viet Nam, said Phat, adding that Viet Nam expects to import apples from Japan and export its mangoes to Japan from September.

During the dialogue, the two countries highly appreciated the close cooperation in the agricultural sector between the two sides in the past.

The two sides would chalk out plans for sustainable development under the medium and long-term vision of agricultural cooperation between Viet Nam and Japan in 2015-19, Phat said.

At the end of the meeting, the two ministers signed a memorandum of understanding on the medium- and long-term vision of agricultural cooperation between Viet Nam and Japan.

Under the vision, Viet Nam would create conditions conducive for Japanese enterprises to make direct investment in Viet Nam's agricultural sector as well as in joint ventures in agricultural production chains, he said.

Japanese firms would also enjoy favourable conditions to enable investment in improving output, ensuring quality products and creating value added products in the agricultural sectors, including livestock, cultivation, production of seeds and animal varieties, processing, preservation and technology after harvesting in Viet Nam.

The two countries would promote public private partnership (PPP) in the agricultural sector, improve farming and food value chains from production to harvesting as well as distribution of products besides research and expansion in regions producing material for agricultural processing and production, he said.

Phat expected that with its high-tech agricultural sector, competitive ability and good management, Japan would extend support to modernise the agricultural sector in Viet Nam. — VNS
