Vietnamese military telecoms group Viettel has responded to Facebook’s accusation that it has used the platform to spread commercial disinformation.
“As a group investing and doing business in 11 countries, Viettel asserts that we always comply with laws and ethics. Viettel always requires all its member companies to strictly abide by the policy,” said Viettel to media.
Viettel was verifying Facebook’s information and was ready to work with the tech company to handle any violations, the group said.
Viettel supported Facebook’s efforts to clean up its platform, the firm added.
Viettel said it hopes that Facebook would guide companies to strictly abide by regulations in a spirit of co-operation, avoiding unilateral allegations.
The Financial Times reported on Wednesday that Facebook had banned a network of two dozen fake pages and accounts linked to Viet Nam’s Viettel and Myanmar’s Mytel.
The pages were supposedly created for "spreading fake news of alleged business failures, market exits and fraudulent activity" about Mytel's rivals.
Mytel is a joint venture between the Viettel Military Industry and Telecoms Group and two local partners. Viettel holds a 49 per cent stake in the joint venture.
After 18 months of operating in Myanmar, Mytel has become the third-biggest mobile network operator and one of the fastest-growing telecoms brands in the country. — VNS
