HA NOI (Biz Hub) — Vietnamese Ambassador to India Ton Sinh Thanh has called for improved travel links between northeast India and ASEAN countries and the facilitation of trade between India and its neighbours.

He made the call during a conference on bilateral economic connectivity, the first of its kind, held in Imphal, the capital of the northeastern Indian state of Manipur, on April 7-9.

Thanh spoke highly of northeast Indias potential in the oil and gas, hydropower and biodiversity sectors and of its workforce quality, adding that Viet Nam welcomed and supported Indias Act East policy.

He said if more incentives were to be made available, the region would draw more direct investment at home and abroad, including from the ASEAN and Viet Nam, in particular.

This action would be considered Indias gateway to the ASEAN. During the 13th ASEAN–India Summit in Kuala Lumpur last November, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a credit line of US$1 billion to support physical and digital connectivity with the ASEAN.

The Indian government has recently embarked on several connectivity improvement projects, including the Kaladan multi-modal transit transport and the India-Myanmar-Thailand expressway. On the occasion, Ambassador Thanh and his ASEAN counterparts toured the India-Myanmar border gate, where the Friendship Bridge connecting Indias Moreh and Myanmars Tamu is located. — VNS
