HA NOI (VNS) — Over 1,000 tonnes of sugar was illegally imported into Viet Nam everyday through the An Giang border gate.
According to Nguyen Thanh Long, chairman of the Viet Nam Sugar Association, the problem had been happening for years, and had taken on a more organised nature.
He explained that illegally imported sugar led to difficulties for sugar producers on the domestic market. In 2012, only 514 tonnes of illegally imported sugar was seized, or 2 per cent of the estimated volume.More than 1,000 tonnes of sugar imported illegally each day. — VNS
